目的： 　世界は今、自然環境資源をいかに確保するかという大きな課題に直面している。気候変動とその影響、食の安全、飲料水の確保、健康問題、生物多様性の保全等は、国内的にも国際的にも大きな関心事となっている。本複合共同研究「地域環境とグローバルな持続可能性への挑戦」は、ローカルな人びとの自然環境との実践的なかかわりをベースにした地域研究のアプローチにより、これらの世界的課題の解決に貢献することを目指す。本複合共同研究に含まれる課題としては、自然環境資源とローカルな人びとのかかわりや実践に関するものだけでなく、それらをグローバルな言説や運動とも関連させた課題も考察の対象とする。ローカルな視点からより深く理解すると同時に、グローバルな動きにローカルな実践を位置づけることの重要性を本プロジェクトで示していきたい。内外の萌芽的なアイデアを持つ研究や、より大きな枠組みでの研究ともリンクすることで、議論のためのより大きなプラットフォームを形成し、新たな価値を見出すことを目的とする。
研究実施状況： 'Area Environments and Global Sustainability Challenges' comprises six projects that are implemented globally (3 projects), in Asia (1 project) and in Latin America (2 projects). One of the contributing projects is Legality of Timber Financing and Trade in the Western Amazon. The funding received from CIAS Joint Research Facility was applied to initiate collaboration with the theme of Legality in Timber Financing and Trade in Asia, particularly focusing on timber value chains between Indonesia /Malaysia and Japan/ China. For this purpose a workshop was held in Bogor Indonesia on January 23, 2015 in which academics participated from Japan, China and Indonesia.
研究成果の概要： －平成26年度－
　FY 2014 saw significant progress in all the six projects that comprise the Area Environment and Global Sustainability Challenges umbrella project. This is reflected in an important number of publications that were produced and an equally significant number of international meetings. Related to the project for which funding from CIAS was used, the Legality of Timber Financing and Trade in Western Amazonia, a study that was co-financed by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR, with whom CIAS has signed a MOU) saw the completion of field work in Bolivia and Peru, the drafting of reports on the two studies, and the preparation of draft papers, and publication of one paper. The workshop held in Bogor, in January 23, has been followed up by discussions for future collaboration between various partners and a first effort to raise funds to implement this collaboration.

今後の展開等：		 －平成26年度－
　In FY 2015, the aim is to expand the work initiated in January on the theme of the Legality of Timber Financing and Trade in Asia. This work will be pursued through a collaboration between CIAS, Nanjing University in China and CIFOR. For this purpose funding will be procured from an external funding agency. However, the commitment to collaborate on this topic already exists between the three partners. For FY2015, hence work to be financed under CIAS Joint Research program is to bring together partners in this work and define the work program and strategies. In addition, at CIAS deskwork will be initiated the preparations that will support the collaborative efforts between the partners. This support will be done through literature review, researching the progress in legality improvement measures in production (Indonesia and Malaysia) and consumption countries (Japan and China).
