◆  Latin American Studies Council of Asia and Oceania (CELAO)


The Latin American Studies Council of Asia and Oceania (CELAO) was established in Osaka, Japan in 2003 to serve as a forum for multidisciplinary research on Latin America and to promote cooperation with similar organizations devoted to Latin American studies in the Asia and Oceania region. It was established at the 11th General Assembly of FIEALC*, hosted by the National Museum of Ethnology and Osaka University in 2003.
The members are People's Republic of China, Republic of China, South Korea, India, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, and Japan.

*FIEALC (Federación Internacional de Estudios de América Latina y el Caribe) is the international organization, composed of more than 100 academic institutions both inside and outside of Latin America. The head office is at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

◆  The Preceding Conferences


The Conferences of CELAO have already been held 5 times. From the 3rd Conference in India, there were established central themes.
  • The 1st Conference: July 14-16, 2005, at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia
  • The 2nd Conference: June 21-23, 2007, at the Convention Center COEX in Seoul, South Korea
  • The 3rd Conference: December 3-5, 2008, at Indira Gandhi National Open University
    The central theme: “Contemporary Latin America and the Caribbean”
  • The 4th Conference: November 22-24, 2010, at the University of Guadalajara in Mexico
    The central theme: “Sociedad, Estado y Mercados ante la Crisis Global en América Latina: miradas desde Asía-Pacífico”
  • The 5th Conference: October 9-11, 2012, at the University of Asia and the Pacific in Manila, Philippines
    The central theme: “Strengthening Exchanges across the Pacific”
